SG of High Relief Commission Maj. Gen. Khair: What happened in Beirut Did Not Happen in the Entire Civil War

Beirut – A very painful portrait of Beirut has been painted yesterday [Tuesday Aug. 5]; it was almost unbelievable. A catastrophe occurred, and everything around its port was virtually destroy. Dozens of missing people, martyrs and thousands of injured paid the price of the destruction; the destruction which has transformed Beirut into a devastated city in every sense of the word.

As attention turns to relief operations, Secretary General of High Relief Commission, Major General Mohammed Khair, confirms to al-Ahed news website that “in the entire civil war and for 30 years, what happened yesterday did not happen,” stressing how speechless he was of the scene.

Khair wishes Beirut residents are safe, hoping that Lebanese will be united and help each other overcome this ordeal, urging all citizens who have no business in the street to stay home, so they would not be obstacle in the process of clearing rubble.

On the level of the relief plan, Khair stresses that any citizen who does not have shelter can go to any hotel and “we will bear all expenses”. As for the process of clearing rubble, there are engineering firms that will follow up on all areas that pose a threat to public safety.

Regarding the time taken by the relief operation, Khair explains, "There are no estimates until the hour and everything is on time."
