Some 16,501,453 people have been infected with the coronavirus globally since the start of the pandemic, according to a Reuters tally published Tuesday.

The tally also put the number of people who have succumbed to the disease at 653,095 so far.

The World Health Organization [WHO] declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus that originated in China's Wuhan a pandemic on 11 March.

The US, India, and Brazil continue to be the worst-affected nations and the only ones with a total number of cases exceeding one million, while Europe, which was the previous epicenter of the pandemic, has seen a resurgence of new cases raising fears of a second wave.
