US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said former National Security Advisor for US President Donald Trump, John Bolton, who has authored an explosive memoir about his tenure, is a liar and a traitor.

"John Bolton is spreading a number of lies, fully-spun half-truths and outright falsehoods," Pompeo said in a tweet.

"It is both sad and dangerous that John Bolton's final public role is that of a traitor who damaged America by violating his sacred trust with its people."

Although Pompeo said he had not yet read the book, "The Room Where It Happened," which the Trump administration is trying to block from publication, but he said he was making his judgment based on the excerpts widely covered by mainstream media outlets.

The book penned by Bolton includes a number of jabs at Pompeo, who is said to have passed Bolton an expletive note on Trump during his first summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un and was critical of his efforts on the Korean front.

Fox News cited an anonymous source close to Pompeo as saying Wednesday he was not a note-passer and urging Bolton to show the paper to back his words -- if it existed.

Bolton is well-known for his hawkish views on North Korea and he left in September shortly after Trump, accompanied by Pompeo, met North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un on the Demilitarized Zone in Korea in a second historical summit.

In the book, Bolton also said that Trump asked his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to help him get re-elected at a meeting -- an allegation denied by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the official in charge of trade talks with Beijing, who said he was at the meeting that Bolton referred to.

He also noted that Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had no trust for Jared Kusher, the key architect of Trump's so-called ‘Deal of the Century’, but the PM's office flatly denied this.
