The United States registered 1,258 coronavirus deaths Friday -- the lowest daily toll in the country in nearly three weeks.

As per an online tracker operated by Johns Hopkins University, the new fatalities, recorded in the 24 hours up to 8:30 pm Friday, bring the overall US death toll to 51,017.

The Friday figures represented a drop by about two-thirds against the 3,176 deaths reported on Thursday, but do not necessarily point to a stable downward trend as that would require a consecutive decline in both deaths and new cases over several days in a row.

The United States is by far the hardest-hit country in the global pandemic, in terms of both confirmed infections, which currently stand at 890,524, and deaths.

It is, however, taking the first cautious steps to re-opening, as gyms, hair salons and tattoo parlors had a green light to reopen Friday in the state of Georgia.
