The death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed 190,000 worldwide and continues to grow. Most nations have introduced severe quarantine and social distancing measures, also tightening border controls in order to curb the pandemic.

The United States remains the country hardest hit by the pandemic, with over 869,000 infected and almost 50,000 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University. New York remains the worst-hit city, with 145,000 confirmed cases and a death toll in excess of 16,300.

Spain and Italy remain the worst-hit countries in Europe, coming right after the US in the number of infected and number of fatalities respectively.

In Spain, the government has allowed some factories and construction work to restart. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said any relaxation in measures — which is likely to start from May 4 — will be done in a cautious and calculated manner.
