Syria and Russia affirmed on Wednesday that the US sanctions imposed on the Syrian people aim at “exterminating people of a whole country,” calling on the international community to exert pressure on Washington to lift these unjust sanctions in light of the spread of the novel coronavirus all over the world.

“The US turns a blind eye to the danger of the spread of coronavirus in Syria as it was doing towards Daesh terrorist organization, and it ignores the UN demands to change the policy of sanctions,” the Syrian and Russian Coordination Committees on the Return of Syrian Refugees said in a joint statement.

The statement further urged the international community to offer the Syrian government an international support and press the US and its European allies to lift the inhumane and illegal sanctions which aim at killing the people of a whole country.

Those sanctions, along with the years of the terrorist war on Syria, limit the Syrian State capabilities to face coronavirus, the statement concluded.
