Former US President Barack Obama endorsed his ex-Vice President Joe Biden as the nominee for the Democratic Party in the 2020 contest for the White House in a video posted on Twitter Tuesday.

In the address, Obama praised Biden as the man who will be able to play on the pillars of his presidency and tread further on the same paths.

He seemingly hinted at expanding Medicare, the public insurance program, currently mostly available for those above 65, to be expanded, and called for the US to report to the Paris agreement on tackling climate change.

Obama, meanwhile, also took jabs at the Republicans as a party that puts Americans in peril on behalf of millionaires and only cares about power, urging the voters to push for a government that will cater to the many, not the few, in an echo of the campaign slogan of ex-UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Earlier, Biden emerged as the apparent challenger for US President Donald Trump as his ex-rival in the race for Democratic nomination Bernie Sanders also endorsed him Monday after dropping out of the race.

With Sanders pulling out, Biden remained the last man standing in the contest that's now sidelined by COVID-19 coronavirus crisis after initially struggling as Sanders swept the early votes.
