US Coronavirus Death Toll Tops 10,000

More than 10,000 people have died of COVID-19 complications in the United States since the outbreak began in late January, John Hopkins University said Monday.

The Baltimore-based University, which has been keeping a running tally of global coronavirus numbers, said there are at least 347,003 confirmed infections in the US with 10,335 deaths.

The world's leading economy is one of the worst-hit countries, trailing only Italy [15,877] and Spain [13,055] in numbers killed by the deadly pandemic.

In New York, the epicenter of America's coronavirus outbreak, the number of reported deaths rose to 4,758 on Monday, there is a reported 130,689 people infected with the virus.

However, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that the state's COVID-19 death rate had remained "effectively flat" for the past two days.

Authorities have warned that between 100,000 and 240,000 people could die from COVID-19 in the US, even if people continue to observe social distancing guidelines.

The pandemic has killed more than 70,000 worldwide since the emergence of the coronavirus in December in China, according to an AFP tally.
