The Democratic Party's national convention will be postponed until August due to the rapid outbreak of the coronavirus in the US.

The Democratic National Committee announced the move on Thursday, saying in a statement that holding the event would be irresponsible during such an unprecedented health crisis.

"During this critical time, when the scope and scale of the pandemic and its impact remain unknown, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow the advice of health care professionals and emergency responders," said Joe Solmonese, CEO of the Democratic National Convention Committee.

The convention was originally scheduled to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin between July 13 and July 16. The new scheduling now puts the Democratic Party event just a week before the Republican National Convention, which is set for Aug. 24-27.

The previous Democratic convention in 2016 drew an estimated 50,000 visitors to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
