Less than half of the Americans want to see US President Donald Trump leave the White House in the wake of the House impeachment vote, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing an exclusive poll.

Only 42% of the respondents in the national online poll said they wanted Trump ousted, while 17% thought a censure -- a formal rebuke -- would suffice.

The report comes as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once again signaled her reluctance to forward the impeachment articles, formal charges approved by the House in Wednesday's vote cast clearly along partisan lines, to the Senate.

Holding the trial for a president facing impeachment is up to the upper chamber of the US Congress, which is currently dominated by the Republicans, and Trump was fuming on Thursday over a possible delay.

Thursday also saw Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell strongly condemn the impeachment and say it was now up to the Republican-led Senate to "put this right."
