The suspect in a school shooting near Los Angeles that killed two and injured at least six has been taken into custody, officials said Thursday.

The shooting took place at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, 40 miles [65 kilometers] north of Los Angeles, on Thursday morning.

"We do have the suspect in custody. He is currently being treated at a local hospital. He is a student, a 15-year-old male Asian," said Los Angeles Country Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

The suspect was being treated for injuries that appeared to be self-inflicted, Villanueva told a local CBS affiliate.

The sheriff said a total of six people had been taken to hospital to be treated for injuries. No details were provided on whether the victims were students or staff.

Officials at the nearby Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia said that a female patient being treated died while two male patients were in critical condition and the third was in good condition.

A White House spokesman said US President Donald Trump is "monitoring the ongoing reports."

Saugus High School and all schools in the William S Hart district were placed on lock-down while authorities flooded the scene.

Major US media outlets initially reported that the suspect was dead, with some saying he had shot himself as authorities hunted him down.
