AL-QUDS-- 'Israeli' police on Sunday recommended indicting embattled Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on charges of corruption in two different cases, police said in a statement.

They said they had gathered sufficient evidence to indict Olmert on charges of accepting bribes and breaching public trust over suspicions he had unlawfully accepted cash-stuffed envelopes from a US businessman.

Police also recommended that Olmert be indicted over suspicions he had billed the same overseas trips several times over, allegedly using the ill-gotten gains to pay for private trips for himself and his family.

The police advice will be submitted to state prosecutors who will review the evidence and make their own recommendation.

While police and state prosecutors can recommend a prosecution, the formal decision to indict a prime minister lies with Attorney General Menahem Mazuz, who is expected to make a decision within the coming weeks.

After months of police investigations and reports on the corruption cases, Olmert announced on July 30 that he would not run in this month's primary election in his Kadima Party and would submit his resignation after a new party leader is chosen.

If Olmert's successor as party leader can form a coalition, the Zionist regime could have a new government in October. If not, an election campaign could extend into 2009.

Olmert would remain in office until a new premier is chosen, heading a caretaker government after he submits his resignation to President Shimon Peres.

Olmert's Kadima Party has only 29 seats in the 120-member parliament, and his successor must patch together a coalition with a majority. Olmert's main partner, Labor, is headed by another ex-premier, Ehud Barak.

Barak left open the possibility that he might seek to replace Olmert.
