A gunman who killed at least three and wounded multiple others at a food festival in California before police said they shot him dead.

Shots rang out earlier Sunday evening at the Gilroy Garlic Festival near San Jose, where eleven people “were down,” emergency medical services apparently told NBC Bay Area.

A witness named Julissa Contreras told NBC a white man in his 30s armed with a rifle opened fire indiscriminately.

Gilroy police said it was "still an active crime scene" at the site of the festival, 30 miles [48 kilometers] southeast of San Jose, one of the largest food festivals in the country.

Videos posted to social media showed a panicked crowd scattering after at least one loud popping noise is heard.

The shooting attack came as the three-day-long annual festival in Gilroy, California, dubbed the “Garlic Capital of the World", was winding down.

The event was recognized in 2017 by Guinness World Records as the 'World's Largest Garlic Festival', according to its website.

US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday night to warn residents to "be careful and safe" as the shooter had yet to be apprehended.
