Syrian Information Minister Bilal Mohsen congratulated the Lebanese people and the Lebanese Resistance for the liberation of Samir Kintar, who he described as the Nelson Mandela of Lebanon, and other detainees.
He also noted the enormous sacrifices that the Resistance made to liberate South Lebanon from "Israeli" occupation in 2000, and its victory in 2006.
"Syria's doors are open to all Lebanese, and we will cooperate with Lebanon to strengthen relations between the two countries and discuss all matters in a way that serves our mutual interests," Mohsen told a delegation of Lebanese-Syrian tourists.
He also added that the two countries are going through a new phase of unity and overcoming obstacles and accusations.
When asked about his expectations for the future of Syrian-Lebanese relations, Mohsen noted that July's Paris meeting between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman will be followed by Syrian FM Walid Mouallem's visit to Beirut to invite Sleiman to visit Damascus.
"The agenda of the expected meeting includes relations between the two countries and the work of the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council.... All matters are open for discussions, regeneration and amplification, including exchanging ties and opening embassies," Mohsen said.
He also noted that Syria had already raised the possibility of exchanging ties in April 2005.
"Exchanging embassies will not solve problems," Mohsen said. "We were living without embassies, but if we want to base our hopes on the establishment of an embassy, we will be making things easier," he added.
Mohsen said he is optimistic over the upcoming meeting between Lebanese and Syrian leaders and also expressed his congratulations for the establishment of the national-unity government in Lebanon.
"Lebanese dialogue is supposed to start, and the Lebanese must come together around one table."
"The future is for those with good intentions, and ultimately, good will prevail. Those who have worked for evil have no future," he said.
Commenting on Syria's readiness to deal with the March 14 forces, Mohsen said that his country only deals with the Lebanese state, its president and its national government.
"If we wanted to deal with March 14, we would have done this, but we don't want to hold partial relations or under-the-table relations."
"We want a unified Lebanon that is a member of the Arab League," Mohsen added.
