The new Cabinet transfer of power began Monday, as the old heads of the Industry and Information ministries passed the baton to the new leadership.

The handover process started with new Industry Minister Wael Abu Faour, who inherited the post from former Minister Hussein Hajj Hasan. Abu Faour said he would work to support the industry sector as “there are no serious strategies to support the industrial sector in Lebanon”.

“We want to protect and support Lebanese industry,” Abu Faour said, according to local media. He also stressed that he would build on the work of previous ministers and not start from square one.

Hajj Hasan congratulated Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Speaker Nabih Berri on the government formation, and he also wished the new Cabinet luck as it faces “the biggest challenge, which is the economic situation.”

Former Information Minister Melhem Riachi expressed hope that his successor, Jamal Jarrah, would help advance and modernize the ministry.

“I am proud to hand over the ministry to someone who is trusted by the Lebanese people, the Future Movement and the Lebanese Forces,” Riachi told reporters during a news conference at the ministry.

Jarrah praised the work of media in Lebanon, saying the country was a refuge for “everyone to express their opinion with freedom.”

His comments come despite the fact that in 2018, Lebanon ranked 100 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index in large part because of the “politicized and polarized” nature of the country’s media, which according to the index in many cases “serve as the mouthpieces of political parties or businessmen.”

Jarrah began his mandate by calling on Lebanese writers to continue to treat things with objectivity, as Lebanon hosts “discussions of all events, revolutions, victories and defeats.”

Representatives of the Defense, Education, Environment, Justice, and Social Affairs ministries will also hold the handover process Monday.
