United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, warned of the deteriorating human rights situation in Myanmar, adding that many parts of the impressive architecture that existed under successive military governments remain.

"It saddens me today to tell you that instead of bringing out a democratic reforms, we promise that a civilian government is consolidating what the military government has worked for many years. Democratic space including the freedom of speech and association is ever fragile," Lee said on Friday from UN headquarters in Bangladesh.

She added that communities among the country remain divided among religious and ethnic lines and members of minorities face marginalization and discrimination.

The government of Myanmar is maintaining its position not to allow her access to the country, Lee noted, stressing her will to work with it with the spirit of cooperation.

"The government of Myanmar said I am biased, however, I stated from the outset of my mandate that I will execute my mandate objectively and independently."
