Syrian refugees gathered Thursday morning in various areas in Lebanon to return home as part of the voluntary returns being organized by Lebanese General Security.

The returnees congregated with the belongings they had in Akkar and Tripoli in the north; Nabatieh, Shebaa, Sidon and Tyre in the south; Burj Hammoud in Mount Lebanon; Arsal and Masnaa in Bekaa; and Beirut.

General Security announced Wednesday that about 1,000 Syrian refugees in total would travel by bus back to Syria through the Abboudieh, Al-Zamarani and Masnaa border crossings.

Relatively, the state-run National News Agency later reported that refugees would also return through the Arida border crossing.

The NNA reported that a group of 250 Syrian refugees from various camps in the northeastern border town of Arsal had gathered near the Lebanese Army checkpoint near Wadi Hmayyed, and that 18 buses had traveled from Syria to Lebanon to take them home.

For its part, Syrian state news agency SANA reported just after 10 am that a group of refugees arrived at the Al-Zamarani crossing, which leads from Arsal to Syria, and were on their way to their towns and villages.

The NNA also reported that another group of refugees had gathered in Tripoli and traveled on buses provided by Syria out of Lebanon through the Arida crossing.

General Security has been registering Syrian refugees who are willing to return voluntarily and organizing their transportation, as well as serving as an intermediary with their country's authorities, who in some cases may reject a potential returnee.
