At least 31 people were killed and 50 sustained injuries in an explosion in Pakistan’s north western region of Orakzai on Friday.

The explosion, officials said, was caused by an improvised explosive device, hidden in a carton of vegetables. It took place near an Imambargah in Kalaya Bazaar.

The country’s Prime Minister Imran Khan strongly condemned the terrorist attack.

He labelled the attack as 'a planned campaign to create unrest in the country by those who do not want Pakistan to prosper'.

The injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment, local authorities said. The area has been completely sealed off and investigation into the incident is under way.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosion in lower Orakzai is the second act of terrorism that takes place in Pakistan on the same day.

Earlier in the morning, a terror attack targeting the Chinese Consulate situated in Karachi's Clifton area was foiled by security forces.
