A man armed with a knife killed two people and seriously injured another on Thursday morning in a town about 30 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of Paris, officials said.

The man was later shot and killed by police, a local government official said.

A French Interior Ministry source announced that the knifeman’s victims were his mother and sister.

Police have advised caution on the attacker’s motivations and are currently carrying out an investigation.

"Trappes. An operation is being carried out by the police… Please, avoid the operation's area and respect the security perimeter," the local police said in a tweet.

BFM TV reported that the man was born in 1982 and was already known to the police after being sentenced a few years ago for being an "apologist for terrorism".

The official account of the French police stated that the attacker had been "neutralized."

France's Interior Minister Gerard Collomb tweeted (see below): "The man has been neutralized. My first thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones".

The Wahhabi Daesh [Arabic acronym for “ISIS” / “ISIL”] terrorist organization later claimed responsibility for the incident, but they have yet to provide evidence to back this up.

However, the statment claiming responsibility for the attack but provided no evidence. The statement came before it was confirmed that the victims were relatives of the attacker.

Trappes has a population of around 30,000 and is part of the far suburbs of the greater Paris area.

This stabbing attack comes just three months after a similar incident in Paris, when a man killed one person and injured four.

According to French media reports, a string of terrorist attacks have killed up to 250 people in France over the past three years.

"My first thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones," Interior Minister Gérard Collomb stated on his Twitter account. "I want to salute the exemplary mobilization of our police forces, which are already investigating the case to establish the circumstances of this tragedy."
