Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Joseph Aoun Tuesday called on the troops to remain alert, saying that although Lebanon was victorious against terrorists, this didn’t mean the country was safe.

Aoun’s comments came during his Order of the Day address to soldiers, ahead of the 73rd Army Day to be marked Wednesday.

“If Lebanon has achieved a decisive victory on terrorism, then this doesn’t mean at all that it has become safe,” he said. “The Israeli enemy is the biggest beneficiary of terrorism in the region and has its eyes on our land and natural resources, and it will not miss a chance to attempt to fulfill its greediness.”

The Army commander praised the soldiers for their work, saying that this year’s celebrations came as Lebanon has removed terrorists from its territories and arrested several of them through preemptive operations.

Last August, the Army launched the Fajr al-Joroud operation to drive out Daesh [Arabic Acronym for the terrorist “ISIS”/”ISIL”] militants from the outskirts of the northeastern towns of Ras Baalbeck and Al-Qaa.

“While positive and important results were achieved through the implemented measures to control smuggling through illegal routes, the decision is clear to continue [this] work and at an escalated pace,” Aoun said. He added that the Army will increase the measures that it is taking in order to solidify the country’s security and stability.
