Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim will require further treatment in the coming days after being discharged from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The ailing cleric has spent the last 48 hours under close observations following a surgery at a London clinic, adding that he will "need medical supervision in the coming period".

According to Sheikh Qassim’s aides, the top cleric underwent a "successful" operation at a London hospital on Thursday, Qatar Tribune reported.

Sheikh Qassim was hospitalized in Bahrain in late June for severe pelvic and back pains after spending over a year under house arrest.

Several days later, he was permitted to leave the Kingdom and seek treatment abroad.

He arrived in London on July 9 and was immediately taken to hospital.

The ayatollah, in his late 70s, was stripped of Bahraini nationality in 2016 by the Al Khalifa regime and had been under de facto house arrest.

Since 2011, Al Khalifa rulers had been embroiled in a brutal crackdown on all dissent, imprisoning or forcing politicians and activists into exile.

Regime authorities have jailed dozens of high-profile activists and disbanded both religious and secular opposition groups.

They have also stripped hundreds of their citizenship, making many stateless, according to Amnesty International.
