One woman died and at least 13 others, including a child, were injured after being shot outside a restaurant in the Canadian city of Toronto.

The shooting happened just after 10pm Sunday, local time, when police were called to reports of shots being fired in the Greektown area.

Witnesses told the Toronto Star that a man dressed in black fired a gun multiple times, some estimating that he fired up to 20 shots.

Police said that a young girl is among the 14 people shot and is in critical condition.

It was also confirmed that the gunman was dead after shooting himself.

Global News quoted an unnamed source as saying that the gunman had shot at police before shooting himself but this has not been confirmed by police.

The injured were taken to various hospitals and an unconfirmed number of people are being treated at the scene.

Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders said: "We are looking at all possible motives... and not closing any doors."
