Over 200 “Israeli” settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Holy Mosque compound in occupied al-Quds ahead of a Jewish holiday, local media outlets reported.

Firas al-Dib, a spokesman for the Religious Endowments Authority said that 237 right-wing “Israeli” settlers stormed the compound through the Moroccan Gate early Wednesday.

The large group toured the compound under a heavy security presence, and many of the settlers prayed and performed Jewish religious rituals.

Although non-Muslims are able to enter the compound during visiting hours, they are not allowed to pray there as per the agreement signed by the Zionist entity and Jordan after the “Israel” regime illegally occupied and annexed East al-Quds in 1967.

Despite the agreement, “Israeli” authorities often allow groups to enter and pray on-site.

Visits by these often hardline settler groups, as well as politicians, inflamed tensions with Palestinians, who fear “Israeli” authorities will try to take control of the compound and limit their access.

Palestine’s Endowments and Religious Affairs Minister Minister Yousef Adais called on people to take part in a march to Al-Aqsa Saturday.

“Al-Aqsa requires that we take a serious position that pushes back the settlers’ attacks and daily violations, which are exponentially multiplying,” he said in a statement.

Identity cards were also confiscated from Palestinians by the “Israeli” occupation police, according to an eyewitnesses.
