The blasts occurred in the wake of the escalating military collisions between the government and the Taliban across the country. Earlier this week the governor of the Nangarhar Province was dismissed due to security deterioration in the region.

Up to 8 Dead, 45 Injured in Multiple Explosions at Afghan Stadium

According to Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the provincial council, three blasts took place at a football stadium during a cricket match at the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

The TOLO Broadcaster reported, that among the killed in the incident were the organizer of the cricket tournament and the deputy mayor of the city of Mihtarlam, 46 kilometers (28 miles) to the north-west of Jalalabad, adding that the Taliban movement denied its involvement in the attack.

These blasts are following the annual "spring offensive" announced by the Taliban in April with over 2,700 attacks conducted by the movement around the country since then. Earlier this week Afghan government reported, that about 300 Taliban militants were killed in the heavy clashes in Farah Province.

Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, with government forces fighting the continuing Taliban insurgency, while terrorist organizations, such as the Wahhabi Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS' / "ISIL"], have also expanded their activities both in Afghanistan and neighboring states.
