Meanwhile, his announcement caused clashes with top advisers who spoke almost simultaneously about the hard work needed to defeat Daesh [the Arabic acronym for terrorist ‘ISIS/ISIL group].

Relatively, Trump's remarks demonstrated how increasingly he is willing to publicly push back against his top military advisers and those tied to the fight against the militant group, who see a long-term US role in both Iraq and Syria.

"Our primary mission in terms of that was getting rid of ISIS. We've almost completed that task and we'll be making a decision very quickly in coordination with others, as to what we'll do," Trump told a news conference.

"I want to get out. I want to bring our troops home."

The US has a 2,000 troops in Syria.

Commenting on Trump's remarks, US Army Gen. Joseph Votel, who oversees US forces in the Middle East as the head of Central Command, said that although the threat from Daesh had diminished, "it is not gone."

For his part, Brett McGurk, the special US envoy for the global coalition against Daesh suggested the US fight against Daesh was not near complete.
