Bahrain Crackdown: Trial of Jailed Opposition Leader Adjourned Until Next Month

The trial of jailed Bahraini opposition leader, Secretary General of the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Sheikh Ali Salman was adjourned for a sixth consecutive time on Monday.
The Manama court scheduled the next hearing for March 1.
Sheikh Salman, who is already serving a 4-year prison term, was charged with an alleged charge of "spying for the state of Qatar" last November.
The charges in the case stem from his contacts with Qatari officials, who acted as mediators during a 2011 US-GCC initiative aimed at resolving Bahrain's political crisis.
The allegations have been widely discredited after it emerged that Bahrain's monarch preapproved Sheikh Salman's interactions with the Qataris.
Meanwhile, those who took part in the 2011 initiative allege that the evidence against the opposition leader has been doctored.
Sheikh Salman was initially jailed in December 2014 and later charged with inciting hatred against the regime.
In this regard, the United Nations and international rights groups have dismissed the charges as politically motivated, calling for Sheikh Salman's immediate and unconditional release.
