Lebanon: Army to Confront any ’Israeli’ Encroachments on Border

As "Israel" conducted construction work on a wall along the Lebanese border, the Lebanese Higher Defense Council Wednesday issued instructions for the country's security forces to confront any "Israeli "aggression on Lebanese sovereignty.
The Council's Secretary-General, Brig. Gen. Saadallah Hamad, said after the meeting that if the wall is built, it "will be considered an aggression against Lebanese territories ... and a clear violation of UN [Security Council] Resolution 1701, in addition to the fact that "Israel" is aggressing on an Exclusive Economic Zone of more than 860 square kilometers."
Hamad went on to say that a decision was taken to continue efforts on the regional and international level to protect Lebanon's rights.
"The Higher Defense Council has given instructions to confront this aggression to prevent "Israel" from building this so-called wall barrier on Lebanese territory," he said.
This comes as "Israel" began construction on the wall in Ras Naqoura.
Shortly before the news was first published, the chiefs of Lebanon's security apparatuses released a statement issuing orders to counter such moves. The Higher Defense Council, headed by President Michel Aoun, held an extraordinary meeting to discuss subsequent actions regarding the wall as well as recent "Israeli" threats against Lebanese maritime oil wealth.
The council also voiced its complete rejection of ""Israeli" statements and allegations regarding the oil and gas resources in the maritime waters falling under Lebanese jurisdiction," the statement said.
On the wall, Aoun demanded that attention be paid to 13 specific points that the government has reservations about. Ministerial sources revealed that both Aoun and Prime Minister Saad Hariri said it was "unacceptable" to give up "any part" of what belongs to Lebanon.
Sources said that the council ordered the Lebanese Army to take necessary measures "that could not be publicized because it falls under classified procedures."
