Convalescing Cuban former president Fidel Castro discussed world affairs for three hours with the visiting president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, state media reported Tuesday. No pictures or video footage of the meeting was immediately released, and there was no information on Castro's health.
According to state media, Castro had "animated and friendly" talks with Chavez, who returned to Caracas on Tuesday after a 24-hour visit and a meeting with President Raul Castro. Castro, 81, and Chavez, 53, discussed world affairs late Monday and "the positive movement that the Bolivarian revolution is undergoing" with the strengthening of Venezuela's United Socialist Party (PSUV), according to the dailies Granma and Rebel Youth (Juventud Rebelde).

Castro was last seen in video and pictures when Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited in mid-January. Fidel Castro has not been seen in public since he fell ill in July 2006. He resigned as president in February, relinquishing the post to his brother Raul. Castro saw Chavez on March 8, and Bolivian President Evo Morales in late May -- and even though the South American leaders said they found him healthy, pictures of the meetings were not released.

"Fidel is sitting there, alive and well, thinking, writing and dictating important strategies for Cuba and our Latin America," Chavez told reporters on Monday.

"Raul, he's holding the reins," he said about the Cuban President with whom he is expected to revise some bilateral agreements. On February 24 Fidel Castro ceded power to his brother a year-and-a-half after undergoing delicate gastrointestinal surgery.
