Jeremy Corbyn "admired Prince Harry and Hezbollah" in a bizarre BBC subtitles blunder as he congratulated the royal and Meghan Markle on their engagement.

The Labor leader was congratulating the Prince and his new fiancée Meghan Markle after they announced on Monday morning they planned to wed.

But the BBC News subtitles of his speech quoted him as saying "Harry and Hezbollah" instead.

Speaking at an event in Glasgow, Corbyn actually said: "Congratulations to Harry and Meghan. I wish them well.

"I hope they have a great time and great fun together and having met Harry a couple of times I'm sure they are going to have a great deal of fun together.

"What I would also like to say is that I really do admire the way that Harry and his brother have drawn attention to mental health conditions all across the country."

The BBC said the voice recognition technology it uses for subtitling live news "misrecognized" part of the Labor leader's speech.

A spokeswoman for the broadcaster said: "The voice recognition technology used when subtitling live news broadcasts misrecognized the phrase ‘his brother' leading to the error, which was corrected onscreen."

The blunder by the broadcaster came after Corbyn faced criticism before he became leader of the party for referring to his "friends in Hezbollah".

Labor activists booed journalists who asked Corbyn for his reaction on the royal engagement news.

Clarence House confirmed the news in a statement on Monday after rumors emerged last week of a major announcement about their relationship.

The news was confirmed in an official statement: "His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle."
