Offensive to Recapture Iraq’s Anbar Begins
Local Editor
Iraqi forces on Tuesday started a new military offensive to recapture two areas in Anbar province from Daesh [the Arabic acronym for the Takfiri ‘ISIS/ISIL' terror group], a military officer said.
The towns of Rayhana and Anah located near the Syrian border, were seized by Daesh in 2014.
The operation comes three days after the Iraqi forces liberated the western town of Akashat, a strategic area rich in minerals, including phosphates.
In August, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the terrorist group in Tel Afar, west of Mosul.
Daesh still controls the western areas of Anbar.
