Al-Assad, Abdollahian Affirm Support for Cessation of Hostilities Agreement

During a meeting in Damascus on Thursday, both sides affirmed that they support the cessation of hostilities agreement that excludes Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS" / "ISIL"] and Jabhat al-Nusra and the other terrorist groups linked to these two organizations.

The Syrian President and Abdollahian considered that the success of this agreement is an introduction for the return of peace and stability back to Syria, through continuing the fight against terrorism and creating the favorable conditions to launch a Syrian-led dialogue where the Syrians themselves can decide the future of their country.

President al-Assad referred to Iran's constructive role in terms of the support it provides the Syrian people in the face of the terrorist war imposed on them and its efforts seeking to find a peaceful solution that preserves the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria.

For his part, Abdoullahian, who is accompanied by a delegation, stressed that his country's support to Syria in the various fields is solid and principled and based on the strategic relationship binding Syria and Iran.

He added that Iran's support to Syria also stems from Iran's unwavering conviction that the terrorism targeting Syria now poses an imminent threat to all the people of the region.

In the framework of the Syrian-Iranian coordination on efforts of combating terrorism and finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria, President al-Assad met with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Shamkhani on January 8th and Chairman of the Iranian Shura Council's Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security, Alaeddin Boroujerdi on January 4th.

Before noon, Abdollahian met with Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Ministry Walid al-Moallem and discussed with him the bilateral relations and the developments in Syria and the results of Astana meeting.

Views of both sides were identical in terms of focusing on boosting the strategic relations between the two brotherly countries and continuing the trilateral Syrian-Iranian-Russian coordination to find a political solution to the crisis based on the outcomes of Astana meeting.
