Bahrain Crackdown: Regime Continues to Detain Rajab, Next Hearing on January 23

The Bahraini regime's Public Prosecutor had extended Rajab's detention for 15 days for pending investigation, having remanded him in custody for a week under the pretext of investigation in allegedly spreading false news and rumors about Bahrain's internal affairs.

According to the Bahrain Center for Human Rights [BCHR], which Rajab chairs, the kingdom's Public Prosecutor ordered the activist to remain in custody over charges related to "insulting state institutions... [and] spreading false news."

In a Twitter post on Thursday, the BCHR said that Rajab's next hearing has been scheduled for January 23.

The human rights campaigner was detained in June of last year for criticizing Manama on social media. During his incarceration, two additional probes were launched into op-eds published in western newspapers and attributed to Rajab.

The United Nations [UN] and international rights groups such as Amnesty International [AI] had called for Rajab's "immediate and unconditional release."
