Gunmen Kill at Least 8 Egyptian Police in New Valley Province

According t
o state television, the attack took place on Monday night at the Naqb checkpoint located in the country's New Valley province.

Egypt's Interior Ministry announced that at least two of the assailants were killed by police during the attack.

The attack is yet to be claimed by any group or persons but it has the hallmarks of the Daesh-affiliated Velayat Sinai terrorist group [Daesh is the Arabic acronym of the Takfiri ‘ISIS/ISIL' organization].

Last week, at least 13 Egyptian security forces were killed in a multipronged militant attack on a checkpoint in the city of el-Arish, the provincial capital and the largest city of Egypt's troubled North Sinai.

Since September 2015, Egypt's military has been engaged in a high-scale security operation against the militants in Sinai, following coordinated terrorist attacks on several army checkpoints that claimed the lives of 21 soldiers in July that year.

Previously known as Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, Velayat Sinai has claimed responsibility for most fatal attacks mainly targeting Egyptian army and police personnel.

In November 2014, the group pledged allegiance to Daesh, which is mainly operating in Iraq and Syria.
