Resigned Minister of Agriculture Talal al-Sahili stated today that the Doha negotiations are positive, but that he would have hoped that such a discussion between parties could have taken place in Lebanon, when called for by Speaker Nabih Berri.
Nonetheless, Sahili argued that it is a sign of encouragement that the negotiations are now occurring between all parties, since the restructuring of the Lebanese state and authorities would be to the benefit of everyone.
During a meeting that occurred on the sidelines of the opening of the office for the Ministry of Labour in Baalbak, Sahili confirmed that the focus was on "the three issues raised at Phoenicia Hotel: the presidency, the national unity government, and the electoral law." The resigned minister stressed that Lebanon cannot emerge from the current crisis without a fair electoral law that represents all Lebanese.
Sahili noted that a proposal of proportional law was put forward to the government, and that there was a subsequent attempt to exit with minimal loss from the judicial law. "There were maneuvers and attempts through the Qatari mediator, and we hope that the next few hours bring us positive results that will help us emerge from the crisis on all levels," he said.
