Syrian Army General Command Announces Nationwide Ceasefire

In a statement carried by state news agency SANA on Thursday, the military command "declares a comprehensive nationwide cessation of hostilities as of midnight."

The Command added that the terrorist organizations of Fatah al-Sham Front [also known as al-Nusra Front] and Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS" / "ISIL"] as well as the groups affiliated to them are excluded from the agreement, SANA reported.

The Syrian Army General Command also pointed out that the ceasefire comes with the aim of creating suitable circumstances for supporting the political track of the crisis in Syria.

It said the ceasefire comes after "the successes achieved by the armed forces" an apparent reference to the capture of neighborhoods, formerly held by militant groups, in Northern city of Aleppo earlier this month.

Syria's State TV also said the cease-fire paves the way for reactivating negotiations to end the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Russia and Turkey will guarantee the truce. Russia is a key ally of the Syrian government, while Turkey supports the opposition.
