"Israel" is considering buying additional submarines from Germany, to be deployed by the Navy in about ten years, Berlin confirmed on Friday.

“Israel” in Talks with Germany to Buy Additional Submarines

The "Israeli" war Forces currently operates five German Dolphin-class submarines, while a sixth is due to be added to the fleet in about two years.

A German government spokesman said talks are currently underway at several levels regarding the additional submarines.

Senior "Israeli" army sources have expressed the desire to take one of the older submarines out of service when the sixth one arrives in the country.

That would leave the navy with five submarines, but with negotiations over the purchase of new subs in progress, the number in the apartheid entity navy's possession could ultimately exceed six.

German sources said that Berlin is expected to provide financial assistance for the sale, apparently in a similar fashion to "Israel's" most recent purchase, for which Germany funded a third of the costs.

Over the weekend, the Maariv daily reported that a memorandum of understanding regarding the sale of additional subs to "Israel" is expected to be signed next month. The price tag of the new purchase is estimated at 1.2 billion euros [$1.3 billion].

Discussions on buying additional German subs have been conducted recently at the political and military level.

Meanwhile, "Israeli" military officials have expressed doubt over whether the navy needs the additional submarines, claiming that the current deployment is sufficient for the necessary tasks.
