Devotees mourned Imam Hussein [AS], the third Shia Imam, for the ceremony, which falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The Ashura ceremony is vital for Shias where devotees reenact the martyrdom of Imam Hussein [AS] by participating in parades.

Imam Hussein's [AS] martyrdom is considered by the Shia community as a symbol of humanity's struggle against injustice, tyranny and oppression.

Ashura is commemorated by Muslim communities across the Middle East including Iran, South Asia, and also across the West.

In the British city of Manchester, crowds of Shia Muslims beat their chests outside the mosque during a ceremony for Ashura.

During Muharram, benefactors cook and distribute food offerings among neighbors, family and the needy. Free food is also offered to people who take part in mourning ceremonies.

Large numbers of black-clad Iraqi and Iranian mourners plus people from other countries had also flocked to the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, which is home to Imam Hussein's [AS] holy shrine, to attend mourning rituals.

Mourning processions are also underway in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Lebanon. Similar ceremonies are scheduled to be held in Europe, America and Africa later in the day.

Imam Hussein was martyred by the army of the Caliph Yazid during the Battle of Karbala, in modern day Iraq.
