Lebanese newspapers on Friday dealt with a variety of topics regionally and internationally. Below are extracts on the up-to-the-minute issues.

DAILY SCOPE: Top Nusra, Army of Conquest Leaders Killed... Will US Sue Saudi Arabia?

On Friday September 9, 2016, As-Safir newspaper shed light on:

Is Washington Ready to Sue Saudi Arabia?

In accordance with the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terror attack, the US House of Representatives is scheduled on Friday to vote on the "Justice against Sponsors of Terrorism Act" [JASTA] which will allow the victims' families to sue Saudi Arabia for monetary compensations.

Based on as-Safir, the House of Representatives' approval of JASTA which has previously been passed by the Senate last May, is expected to face a potential showdown from the White House. US President Barack Obama had threatened to veto the bill shall it be passed by the US Congress' two chambers.

Initially, the American law does not allow other countries to be sued in US courts. However, if JASTA becomes law, it would remove the sovereign immunity, preventing lawsuits against governments, for countries found to be involved in terrorist attacks on US soil.

It would allow survivors of the 9/11 attacks and families of the victims to seek damages from Saudi Arabia as 15 Saudis were involved in the attack that killed over 3000.

This comes as the US-based International Policy Center [IPC] published its report that shed light on the US-Saudi alliance's arms trade - the biggest deal in 71 years - where the Obama administration offered Riyadh $115 billions worth of military equipment and training.

Moving on to Al-Akhbar Newspaper. For Friday's edition, al-Akhbar shed light on the following issues:

Yemeni Progress in Jizan, Saudi Arabia Back to Defense

The Yemeni Army and Popular Committee declared their control over al-Khubah city's al-Dafina and al-Qarn villages in Jizan.

Moreover, a field military source reported that hours after Yemeni forces tightened control over the two villages, the Saudi army conducted 3 attacks involving dozens of armored vehicles in a bid to restore the two villages.

Al-Akhbar quoted a field leader who confirmed the death of more than 30 Saudi soldiers in the artillery operation that targeted the western Jizan.

It is noteworthy that all the major combat operations are launched from the Saudi territory.

Accordingly, a source in the War Media said that Saudi warplanes carried out over 300 air strikes on al-Shaibani position after the Yemenis established control over it a week ago.

Al-Binaa's edition for Friday, September 9, 2016 discussed the following:

Tehran: Al-Jubair's Accusations to Iran are "Void Comments"

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi rejected Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir's accusations about Iran's support for terrorism, describing them "far from reality and unacceptable".

Ghasemi said, Thursday, that the world has gradually come to be aware of the "bitter truth" that terrorist organizations such as Taliban, al-Qaeda and Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS" / "ISIL"] are either citizens of Saudi Arabia or influenced by extremist Wahhabi thoughts.

Referring to the Yemeni crisis, Qasemi said that Saudi Arabia has denied the Yemenis from security and stability and imposed a devastating and unjust war against them.

He further added that the problems peoples of the region are facing is caused by foreign intervention and the insistent on pursuing policies that increase the complexity of the situation and destabilizes security.

Kerry Meets Lavrov in Geneva after Stalling... US Raid Kills al-Nusra Leaders

Al-Binaa newspaper shed light on American's acceptance of the US-Russian talks which can no longer be an indication of a solitary action of the US State Department under the war department's discrediting speeches.

However, prior to the announcement of the US-Russian meeting, warplanes of the US-led alliance via the war department launched airstrikes that targeted an al-Nusra Front meeting, killing 3 of the group's commanders among which was Abu Omar Saraqeb, the military commander in Aleppo.

This is the first US raid on al-Nusra Front sites, al-Binaa stated.

Thus, it is the first application of the repeated Russian demand that the Americans ought to be serious and effective in their engagement in the war on al-Nusra.

Accordingly, the meeting between Kerry and Lavrov in Geneva on Friday would be a serious chance to reach an understanding to ensure partnership in the war on terror and separate armed factions that are willing to engage in the same political solution from al-Nusra Front locations.
