"Israeli" police had questioned a former aide to "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding a new investigation into fund-raising for a smear campaign aimed at Ehud Barak, Channel 10 reported Monday night.

Former Netanyahu Aide Questioned in New Probe

The report said that police are checking how Netanyahu's aides raised GBP 28,000 [around NIS 140,000] for a campaign to prevent the former prime minister from making a political comeback.

Barak has in recent months repeatedly criticized Netanyahu, both in the "Israeli" entity and abroad, for his and his government's running of the country.

He has also met with Netanyahu's rival and former war minister Moshe Ya'alon, who is currently planning a comeback in time for the next general election.

Anti-fraud police from the Lahav 433 unit have also raided the offices of a PR firm which works for Netanyahu.

In other news, Channel 2 reported on Monday that police are expected to close their investigation into opposition leader Isaac Herzog [Zionist Union].

Accordingly, Netanyahu is himself the subject of a police investigation into foreign funds he received after resuming office in 2009. He has dismissed any wrongdoing.

He is also implicated in a separate fraud case involving French tycoon Arnaud Mimran, who is said to have previously paid out unrelated donations to the "Israeli" PM.

A French court has convicted Mimran of fraud and sentenced him to eight years in prison and one million euros [upwards of one million dollars] in fines in a 2008-2009 fraud case.
