AL-JOMHOURIA: Berri Assures Ball in Court of Politicians in Terms of Elections

Head of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri told his visitors on Wednesday that "the ball is now in the court of the politicians who can either agree on a new electoral law or settle for that of 2008, said al-Jomhouria newspaper on Thursday.

According to the paper, his visitors quoted Berri as saying that "it is inevitable that the politicians agree on an electoral law," adding that "it is essential that the political powers consider Lebanon's interest and agree on an electoral law of which all parties approve and are satisfied with."

"[The politicians] have no excuse to keep the country disabled," Berri noted.

Lebanon's parliament has extended its term twice, once in 2013 and another in 2014, due to officials' failure to agree on a new electoral law.

On another note, Labor Minister Sejaan Qazzi commented on the file of the Syrian Refugees, as he told al-Jomhouria that the issue of naturalization is no longer a "scarecrow", but it has become obvious according to the 26-page report of the UNSC that it is an international decision.

"It is unfortunate that the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon who should be in charge of protecting entities and preserving its sovereignty has become a partner in imposing the naturalization of Syrians in Lebanon.

AN-NAHAR: Ban is Another Kissinger; Imposing Naturalization Not Accepted

Lebanese Labor Minsiter Sejaan Qazzi told An-Nahar newspaper that "Ban Ki-Moon is just another Kissinger who is preparing for a new war in Lebanon."

Qazzi's comments came on the backdrop of the decision of the UN to open the door for naturalization even without consulting Lebanon. The Lebanese official added that the Lebanese will face the situation united together, "because Lebanon in 2016 is very different from that of 1975."

The UN has estimated the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon at about 1.5 million, in addition to nearly 400,000 Palestinian refugees. Lebanese officials have sounded fears of naturalizing the refugees, or keeping them in the country for a long time, a scenario similar to the Palestinian refugees, who have had a presence in Lebanon since the 1948 "Israeli" occupation of Palestine.

The debate began when UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon made a speech during a recent visit to Lebanon, in which he stressed the importance of accepting refugees.

AL-AKHBAR: Lebanese Banks to Cooperate According to New Mechanism on US Act

Lebanese daily al-Akhbar said on Thursday that "there are many indications that the coming week will bring about solutions to the US Act against Hizbullah. According to the paper, the meeting between the Banks committee and MPs Hussein Haj Hassan, Ali Fayad and former MP Amine Sherri shows that the banks are willing to cooperate according to the mechanism suggested by head of the Central Bank Riyadh Salameh, which implies that the banks should inform the concerned investigation committee before taking measures and freezing of closing any bank accounts.

The US regulation, which was signed into law in December, targets any individual or institution related to Hizbullah. Earlier last month, Salameh called on Lebanese banks to freeze the accounts of all the individuals listed by the US Treasury for alleged connections with Hizbullah.

The decision drew the fury of Hizbullah MPs, and the Loyalty to Resistance parliamentary bloc denounced the Lebanese banks' commitment to the US Act, assuring that such move is violation to Lebanon's sovereignty.
