The repercussions of the municipal and mayoral elections in Beirut make the headlines of Lebanese newspapers for the third day in a row, especially due to the blow received by the Future party and the disappointment from its allies in the electoral process.

Daily Scope: Clear Rift between Future Party, Christian Allies

Newspapers focused on a state of rift and tension between the Future party and its Christian allies, and tried to anticipate what will happen in the near future especially on the level of mayoral elections.

AS-SAFIR: Obvious Rift between Future Party, Christian Allies

As-Safir newspaper on Wednesday said that the municipal elections in Beirut left deep scars and cracks on the shaky relationship between the "Future" party and its Christian allies which are topped by the Lebanese Forces.

According to the paper, the dispute between the parties has become so clear after the results of the municipal elections in Beirut, which reflects an old and accumulating crisis that has started with the Orthodox law and does not end at the presidential void.

The daily went on to say that nothing can justify the "betrayal" that Hariri has been subject to, and the bitterness of his allies' attitude which implies there is a lot more to this attitude hidden in the hearts.

Hariri on Monday accused some parties who nominated certain candidates on the Future party-backed Beirutis List of "voting for other lists" in the capital's municipal elections that were held Sunday.

The turnout was low in the capital, with only 20 percent of registered voters casting votes, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq had said.

AL-AKHBAR: Hariri was Worried due to Conflicting Information on Elections

In the same context, al-Akhbar newspaper said that some of the people who surrounded former PM Saad Hariri last Sunday during the elections admitted that "he was worried for some time due to the conflicting information after the preliminary results of the voting process, especially in Beirut which exposed that the Lebanese Forces, Free Patriotic Movement and the Phalanges party supporters did not vote for the entire "Beirutis" list.

A source told the newspaper that ‘Hariri was afraid of answering a major question, that is "whether the leaders of the three parties, Aoun, Geagea and Jemayel, had decided not to commit to the alliance; or whether they have become weak and cannot oblige their supporters to adopt the leaderships' positions."

The first round of elections -of the four-phase municipal elections, which take place every six years, in the Bekaa governorate were held on Sunday, along with the Beirut and Baalbek-Hermel governorates.

However, Mount Lebanon elections are set for May 15, South Lebanon and Nabatieh for May 22, and North Lebanon and Akkar for May 29. The number of municipal seats contested in the first round of municipal elections in Beirut and the Bekaa Valley is 2,124, while the number of mayors' posts is 668.

AN-NAHAR: Berri Reiterates Demands for New Electoral Law

Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri reassured his demand for the adoption of a new electoral law before heading to the parliamentary polls, reported An-Nahar Lebanese daily on Wednesday.

According to his visitors, Berri said that "the parliamentary elections can be held after witnessing the success of the municipal ones," adding "We are now in a race against time."

Moreover, Berri rejected any attempts to extend the term of the parliament for the third time.

It is worth noting that the current parliament's term will end in ten months. The joint parliamentary committees have been holding regular meetings to zero in the number of electoral draft-laws before referring a few over to parliament.

Parliament extended its own term twice, once in 2013 and again in 2014. Legislative elections were supposed to take place in 2013, however the absence of an electoral system alternative to the 1960s law and the unstable security situation in the country at the time were given as reasons by most MPs to extend their own terms.
