Resigned Minister of Foreign Affairs Fawzi Salloukh said that the rules of engagement were "practical instructions given to leaders in any field of the United Nations for the limits of the powers entrusted to them" in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701, which formulated the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stationed at the Lebanese-Israeli border.
"Therefore the rules of engagement are fully compatible with UNSCR 1701 in the case of the UNIFIL in Lebanon," Salloukh added.
On Wednesday, re-elected Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he would be assessing the rules of engagement of the Italian unit in the UNIFIL forces, saying that the soldiers could not react in "certain situations."
Replying to a question about Berlusconi's statement on Radio Al-Nour, Salloukh that "in principle, the (Italian) force cannot overcome the resolution adopted under Chapter 6, which defines the mission of UNIFIL in helping the Lebanese army to control security and consolidate stability in the South."
Salloukh stressed that Lebanon was concerned in any attempts to amend the rules of engagement and intended on maintaining the rules in line with UNSCR 1701, which "enshrines the UNIFIL mission in the framework of close cooperation with the Lebanese military forces."
