Lebanese newspapers on Wednesday, the 24th of February shed light on several domestic files. The Saudi ongoing escalation stood out as newspaper headlines focused on the repercussions of the Saudi boom and how the Gulf country is trying to lead a war against Lebanon. Saudi Arabia, according to papers, not only led to the postponement of Lebanese PM Tamam Salam's tour to the Gulf countries, but also expressed its dismay at the March 14 attitude inside the Lebanese government and deemed all attempts of the political camp to please Riyadh as unfruitful.

AL-JOMHOURIA- Saudis Not Pelased with March 14 Performance, Rifi Pilgrim to Saudi Embassy

Well-informed sources told al-Jomhouria newspaper that Saudi Arabia is not pleased with the performance of the March 14 bloc in the cabinet. The bloc was informed of the Saudi feedback, sources pointed out.

As for the resignation of the Justice Miniser Ashraf Rifi, the supposedly close ally of head of the Future party Saad Hariri, sources said it was stunning that he was received at the Saudi embassy in Lebanon on Tuesday, noting that his stepping down comes after communication with Arab parties on more than one level, stressing that his resignation was not a mere Lebanese decision. According to the source, Rifi and the Saudi Ambassador Ali Awadh Asiri had a closed-door meeting in which they discussed the tense Lebanese-Saudi relations.

Moreover, governmental sources expressed fears that "some Gulf countries this time might halt Lebanese businesses there, which might include Lebanese businessmen from different sects and religious backgrounds.

Gulf countries, majorly the United Arab Emirates have made such sudden deportation moves against Lebanese citizens for no clear reasons in the past other than political.

The new measures against the Lebanese government came following Foreign Minister Gebran Basil's stance on Saudi resolutions concerning Iran. The Foreign Minister declined to support Saudi resolutions against Iran during two recent meetings of Arab and Muslim foreign ministers.

AN-NAHAR- Saudi Escalation Reaches UN Hallways

The snowball is growing bigger and bigger; as if saying that more deterioration is about to take place in Lebanon's position from the Saudi-Iranian dim tunnel and threatening stability in the country as well as the fate of its government.

This time, according to An-Nahar, the crisis of Lebanon's relation with Saudi Arabia and the Arab Gulf countries have crossed boundaries to reach the hallways of the United Nations and decision-making capitals, due to its direct impact on the small and troubled country that holds so far two million Syrian and Palestinian refugees that had fled their homeland and came to reside in it.

An-Nahar came to know that the United Nations officials in Beirut have sent a memo to UN chief Ban Ki-moon to sound the alarm on the economic, security and social repercussions of measures taken by several Gulf States against Lebanese nationals residing in those countries.

The Lebanese daily added that "The officials issued a warning that such measures including the forcible return of the Lebanese to their country would have a severe impact on Lebanon's already deteriorating economic situation."

The officials added that "the moves could lead to chaos and have impact on the security and social situation in the country, impeding the humanitarian work of the UN and its role in the South," warning that a fifth column could take advantage of the possible chaos and carry out terrorist attacks in the country.

Several reports emerged that Gulf countries will start deporting more Lebanese after taking similar moves in the past.

AL-AKHBAR- Saudi Arabia Showing Aggressive Attitude towards Lebanon

The Lebanese prominent al-Akhbar newspaper on Wednesday said that "either Future party Head Saad Hariri's signing of the petition, the Council of Ministers statement, or the constant pilgrimage to the Saudi embassy in Lebanon made al-Saud stop its aggressive policy towards Lebanon."

"After preventing Saudis from visiting the "land of cedar trees", will the Saudi regime carry out its decision to decrease the cabinet expenses by expelling the Lebanese residing in the Gulf countries under the pretext of punishing Hizbullah?" the paper wondered.

The newspaper went on to say that "the Saudi regime turned its back on all the calls that were made by its political party in Lebanon, and unlike previous times when Saudi Arabia was all ears to its political allies in Lebanon, this time Saudi Arabia set a deaf ear to the stances of the Future party, the communique issued by the Ministerial Council and the petition signed by Saad Hariri himself."

The Future party, according to the paper, turned a blind eye in its turn to the Saudi stance and continued its attacks on the Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Basil for the stance he gave on the Saudi rage against Iran, even though he had clearly condemned the attacks on the Saudi diplomatic buildings that took place in [Tehran and Mashhad following the execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia].
