Lebanese newspapers on Monday 25-01-2016 tackled different domestic and regional topics, most important of which was the new events related to the Presidential elections in Lebanon.

DAILY SCOPE: Storm Hits Lebanon, Latakia Announced Free of Terrorists

The Lebanese presidency remains in stalemate amid efforts by the Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri to resolve it. At the time the presidential storm in Lebanon continues, the storm ‘Thalassa' hits Lebanon, brining heavy rains, snow and low temperature degrees which prompted the Education Minister to order schools to close today.

On the regional level, the dailies discussed the latest visit of Chinese President to Iran, as well as the developments taking place in Yemen and Syria.

AS-SAFIR-Franjieh Adhering to His Presidential Candidacy

Christian sources told As-Safir newspaper that Head of the Marada party Suleiman Franjieh is strongly adhering to his candidacy for the presidential elections.

The sources said that Franjieh's doors in Bneshi are ‘open' to Head of the free Patriotic Movement Michel Aoun or Minister Gebran Basil anytime, yet such a visit will not change his stance on running for presidency. The sources further noted that Franjieh might change his stance only in case Aoun explicitly expressed his acceptance of a Plan "B", where Aoun would withdraw for the favor of Franjieh if Aoun does not get the majority of votes.

On a related note, As-Safir newspaper said House Speaker Nabih Berri assured that the session to elect a president [to be held on the 8th of February] will not be any different from previous sessions in terms of the mechanism, where in case of lack of quorum, the session will be postponed.

Since the presidential vacancy in May 2014, House Speaker Nabih Berri has called for about 30 sessions that have been adjourned over lack of quorum.

Newspapers last week said that "The session most probably will not take place in absence of March 14 and March 8 lawmakers and that the March 14 camp might boycott the session over fears that the results would not be in their favor."

Quoting Berri's visitors, the paper pointed out that the he lamented losing a good chance as "the Lebanese did not make use of the chance to make a decision and elect a president during the time when the regional players were all busy."

Berri also underscored that there are four Christian poles in the country, which was made clear during the meetings held at the Patriarchy in Bkerki.
"There should be consensus among the four Christian parties in the country on the presidential file," said Berri.

AL-LIWAA-Storm Hits Lebanon, Schools and Ports Closed

Along with the political storm, a snowstorm coming from East Europe has been lashing Lebanon since Friday, causing damage in many buildings and trapping people in their houses.

The storm, with snow falling at 400 meters, forced the closure of two ports in the southern city of Tyre on Sunday and prompted the education minister to order the closure of all public and private schools and technical institutes.

AL-BINAA-Aoun Increases Communication with All Parties

Sources told al-Binaa newspaper that Head of the free Patriotic Movement MP Michel Aoun is open to dialogue and communication with all political sides in the country despite the aggressive attitude of some Future Party members.

Sources pointed out that it is very normal Aoun would increase his maneuvers and communication with others, which is the correct attitude in this case.

Two weeks ago, Geagea announced his decision to nominate Aoun for the presidential election that has been delayed for around 20 months due to the lack of the political consensus among the various factions.

In a joint press conference, Geagea said that after mulling the political complications which caused the presidential vacancy, the Lebanese Forces decided to support General Aoun's candidacy. Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May 2014.

AL-AKHBAR-Latakia Soon Declared Free from Terrorists

A military source present on the ground and taking part in the operations in Syria told al-Akhbar newspaper that Latakia is soon to be declared as a "safe city" and free from any terrorist fighters' presence.

The source said that new Special Forces have been sent to support the attacks against the terrorist groups, especially after the Syrian army and its allies recaptured Salma strategic town.

According to a military official, one of the main reasons to the speeding of the liberation process was the Turkish foolishness and shooting down a Russian jet in November 2015, which accelerated the process of "reinforcing the Syrian coast against Turkish intervention."

According to field sources, the armed groups withdrew towards the Turkish territories and lands uncontrolled by the Syrian government in Idlib outskirts, after the Syrian army retrieved around 18 towns and cities over the past few days.

The Syrian army and its allies have been making major advances in Damascus, Aleppo, Latakia as well as Daraa and inflicting heavy losses upon the militant groups, in their anti-terrorist operations across the country.
