Lebanese newspapers on Friday discussed the different domestic issues, addressing the top important dossiers in the country including the national dialogue, the presidential void and the waste management crisis. The national dialogue between the Future Party and Hizbullah received special attention, especially in light of the regional tensions with political escalation taking place between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Papers also touched on the different regional developments.

AN-NAHAR-Dialogue to Continue Away from Tensions

A meeting took place on Thursday between Interior Minister Nuhad al-Mashnouq and Speaker Nabih Berri, in which they discussed the latest developments and the imminent dialogue between the Future party and Hizbullah.

Prominent Future party sources told An-Nahar newspaper on Friday that the two officials "expressed a common wish to preserve the contacts over the dialogue and keep them away from the verbal arguments as well as domestic and regional tensions".

According to the source, they stressed that "the presidential void should be filled soon, and until then the cabinet should try to find a driving force for the government to function and provide people with their needs."

Talks between the Future party and Hizbullah are scheduled for Monday under the sponsorship of Berri. An-Nahar said that the talks might result with some new positive atmosphere this time.

On another note, Prime Minister Tammam Salam is expected to call cabinet to convene on Friday or Saturday, reported the daily.

The meeting will likely be held on Thursday, ministerial sources told the paper.

Salam is seeking to hold a "productive" cabinet session that will tackle draft-laws and decrees that are considered as a priority for the people.

Lebanon has been without a president since May 2014 when the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.

The latest presidential initiative, proposed by Saad Hariri, leader of the Future Movement, contemplated the selection of Marada Movement chief Suleiman Franjieh. News of the presumed choice was met with opposition from different sides in the country.

House Speaker Berri insisted that internal obstacles were preventing the plan from happening, while Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rai maintained that the initiative was serious "regardless of the identity of the candidate."

AL-JOMHOURIA-Future, Hizbullah Keen on Dialogue despite Tensions

Lebanon was directly impacted by the Saudi-Iranian tensions that took place after Saudi's execution of prominent Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, said al-Jomhouria Lebanese daily on Friday.

The newspaper pointed out that the crisis affected the presidential impasse in Lebanon which was seeing some progress. But after the crisis, the session to discuss the presidential elections was postponed until the 7th of February.

As for the dialogue between the Future party and Hizbullah, Nader Hariri delivered a message from head of the Future party Saad Hariri the Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil assuring that the former and his party are adherent to the continuation of the national dialogue.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Nuhad al-Mashnouq declared on Thursday from Ein al-Tineh that the atmosphere will be positive and will allow the dialogue to take place, because all sides have hopes of easing tensions in the country.

Al-Jomhouria further quoted concerned sources as saying that the dialogue session between the Future party and Hizbullah this time "is very sensitive and important, especially following the political escalation that took place in the region and Lebanon."

Dialogue between the two parties had kicked off on December 23, 2014. Following the third session on January 16, the conferees declared that they had made "clear progress" that might lead to results that can help "consolidate national stability."

Both sides have repeatedly voiced their support for dialogue between rival factions in an attempt to cope with the country's political and security challenges.

As-Safir-Waste Crisis to See Partial Solution?

Following up on the waste management crisis, sources told As-Safir newspaper that the new wastes only, [around 2500 tons daily] will be exported to Cyprus and from there these will likely be transported to European countries.

Yet all wastes older than 45 days will not be treated or exported, said the sources. It is worth mentioning that there are at least 200 thousand tons of accumulated wastes that are left without treatment or burning, which raises the question on how will the problem be solved.

The waste management crisis erupted on July 17 following the closure of the Naameh landfill south of Beirut, which had been receiving trash from the capital and Mount Lebanon since 1997. The landfill was meant to operate for only a few years until a comprehensive solution was devised. But the government has so far failed to resolve the issue.
