New7Wonders president and founder Bernard Weber announced on the organization's official website that Beirut is one of the seven new cities on the 2014 list of Seven Wonders, after 28 cities made it to the finals in October.

Beirut among New7Wonders CitiesA panel of experts, which included architecture and urbanism scholars, selected the 28 finalists and voters then narrowed the selection down to seven through subsequent elimination rounds.

In addition to the Lebanese capital, the list also included Doha, La Paz, Vigan, Kuala Lumpur, Havana and Durban.

Weber expressed the significance of the selection of these cities saying: "We began with more than 1,200 nominees from 220 different countries and here we have seven that represent the global diversity of urban society.
"For the first time in human history, more than half of our planet's population lives in cities and this election emphasizes the dramatically challenging character of our changing world."

Weber said the votes will now be validated, and that after the process is complete New7Wonders will collaborate with the confirmed cities to organize the official inauguration.

"The New7Wonders Cites will now join the New7Wonders of Nature and the New7Wonders of the World in becoming part of Global Memory for humanity forever," said Weber.

New7Wonders Foundation is a Swiss non-profit foundation founded in 2011 that seeks to document and conserve natural and man-made wonders worldwide.
