Imam Khamenei Commends Al-Maliki Efforts to Promote Stability in Iraq

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, His Eminence Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, hailed on Monday the measures taken by the former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to maintain independence and stability in the country.
The Imam said that what al-Maliki did for Iraq during the period of transition of power was a great achievement which prevented the country from falling into a state of instability and chaos.
Furthermore, Imam Khamenei said that the present policy of al-Maliki in trying to create proximity and unity among different Iraqi groups was a good one which should be continued.
For his part, al-Maliki expressed gratitude over his meeting with Imam Khamenei and said Iran has always rendered the highest assistance to the Iraqi nation and government in confronting terrorists and agents of foreign countries.
Al-Maliki stepped down as Iraq's premier in August and voiced support for his successor Haidar al-Abadi. He said his decision to give up the position shows his desire to "safeguard the high interests of the country."
