An Egyptian court sentenced Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie to life in prison on Saturday for inciting violence that erupted after the army deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi last year in 2013, an Egyptian television channel reported.

Badie, convicted along with some 36 other Brotherhood leaders and supporters for the same crime, is facing the death sentence in two separate cases, ONTV reported.

Additionally, the court also upheld death sentences for 10 other Brotherhood supporters. Many of the co-defendants were tried in absentia.

In March, a court  sentenced 529 alleged Mursi supporters to death for similar charges. The judge subsequently upheld 37 of those sentences and commuted the rest to life in prison.

Meanwhile, Mursi has been in jail since he was overthrown and is on trial for inciting the killing of opposition protesters in December 2012 outside the presidential palace.
