Iran on Wednesday proposed Cairo as the venue for the next talks with world powers on its nuclear drive, adding that the Egyptians have welcomed the idea, the ISNA news agency reported.
Earlier, Iran proposed that "the next meeting be held in Cairo, and it was welcomed by our Egyptian brothers," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said after a cabinet meeting.
"Egypt is consulting with the 5+1," he added of the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France plus Germany.
In parallel, Salehi stressed that "consultations are under way between Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and Catherine Ashton," the EU foreign policy chief who represents the P5+1 in nuclear talks with Iran.
"The date and venue of the talks will be announced by the Supreme National Supreme Council" which oversees the nuclear negotiations," he added.
Salehi also rejected media claims about Iran's dissatisfaction with Turkey's hosting of the talks, and stated that "Turkey made great efforts as the previous host of the negotiations and held them in a very good manner."
The Iranian diplomat noted that other countries would also like to host the talks and Jalili has come to the conclusion that it is better for the negotiations to be held in different countries.
Iran and the P5+1 group have held several rounds of talks with the main focus being on Iran's nuclear energy program. The last round of negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 was held in Moscow in June, 2012.
Iran continuously repeated that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
