The Gaza Strip yet again displayed unique sense of worth, however, this time it was through international prodigies.
Areej outdid over 2500 competitors representing 10 countries when she was able to solve around 180 complex mathematical problems in a few minutes.
The credit of developing "The Mental Arithmetic Program" goes to the Malaysian Academy Intelligent Mental-Arithmetic, an educational program that uses the abacus, designed to promote and boost the brain's mental skills, broaden horizons, strengthen the imagination, burnish talents, develop creativity, focus, and acuteness, fortify different arithmetical capabilities, boost memory, and increase attention rates.
In an interview with al-Ahed news website, Areej stressed that "this Palestinian accomplishment arises from the bitter reality she lives in the occupied lands in general, particularly the Gaza Strip," reminiscing continual aggressions, blockade policies, and indefinite livelihood difficulties due to the occupation.
The Palestinian child further underscored that a lot of her friends, those younger than her who have the same academic level possess exceptional skills and talents but are deprived from the simplest elements of a stable life.
On a similar note, Areej's father stressed the necessity of developing similar talents, no matter the livelihood circumstances or rough political and economic situations.
He counted this talent as yet another weapon against the Zionist entity that continuously attempts on making Palestinians ignorant and uneducated by targeting their educational centers and placing obstacles for students to attend to their schools and colleges.
